That Guy - That Girl |
That Girl: Summer MarionIn a world where students are often knowledgeable about only their own nation’s politics, Summer Marion offers a refreshing change: Just ask and she will happily talk to you about governmental structures in Asia, the political warfare and struggles in Africa or the most recently elected world leader. That Girl: Jess LamontJess Lamont is likely to be the only student on this campus who can read and write fluently in Sanskrit. That Guy: Andrew CockramThis week’s That Guy, Andrew Cockram, describes himself as an eccentric bobo — a bohemian bourgeoisie who aspires to be a true Southern gentleman, but also likes listening to jam bands and wearing African garb. He also has a talent for connecting and linking a diverse student body. Drew can often be found playing washboard for the Appalachian Music Ensemble or sitting at a table on the UC Terrace in deep discussion. His quirky and relaxed character is evident by his clothing: a distinct mix of preppy J. Crew pants and brightly colored wraps and tie-dyed shirts. That Girl: Laura FerrellLaura Ferrell’s composed, gentle and motherly personality reminds me of the Laura Ingalls Wilder character from the “Little House on the Prairie” series. They are also both witty and committed to their respective causes. Instead of hailing from Kansas however, this Laura is from the nearby Richmond area where she grew up with her parents and an older sister. And as Laura describes to me her love of lying in bed reading a good Virginia Woolf novel, I am taken back to “Little House of the Prairie,” only this time, it is a different Laura I see curled up inside a log cabin with a fire crackling in the background. That Guy: Andrew CunninghamI walk into the room for our interview to find Andrew Cunningham sitting at a table with two cups of fresh hot cocoa, candy canes and marshmallows. The table is scattered with holiday cards, most of which are already written and addressed. He is potentially the only person I know... That Girl: Rebecca HamfeldtOne of Rebecca Hamfeldt’s favorite quotes is Buscaglia’s “Life is a paradise for those who love many things with a passion.” Rebecca has spent her years at the College finding and promoting those things about which she is passionate — InterVarsity, DoG Street Journal and Students for Life. That Guy: Jonathan WelleLate at night, you can find Jonathan Welle in one of two places: slaving over work in Tucker Hall or streaking somewhere on campus. Welle, with his incredibly dynamic personality, is the only man who could mesh these activities so seamlessly. He’s a modern cowboy with his signature eyebrow... That Girl: Tina HoTina Ho is the human version of the energizer bunny. Her current involvements range from serving as the student representative to the Board of Visitors to being a youth soccer coach. Every Wednesday night when the clock hits 10:30 p.m., a group of students leave their study groups and late... That Guy: Judd KennedyJudd Kennedy has a lot to smile about. He has just been announced as a Marshall Scholar. This is a scholarship that will finance his studies at any U.K. university of his choice next year. Judd was also recently initiated into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. These accolades are just the beginning of describing Judd: eloquence, unassuming intellect — he is fluent in Arabic — passion, and of course, his beautiful eyes and gentle demeanor. That Guy discusses his journey, which includes his passion for social justice, his studies and his plan to eventually live and work in the Middle East. That Guy: Daniel MaguireDaniel Maguire is the male version of Oprah — a man whose patient and nurturing personality encourages fellow students to confide in and rely on him. Dan’s love for the College is immediately evident. |
